Grade 6 students have had a positive start to Term Two, building their connections and leadership skills within our school community. Students are continuing to develop their leadership skills in a variety of ways, including attending the GRIP leadership day in Geelong, alongside student leaders from across the Geelong and Colac region.
In English, students have undertaken a new text study novel, ‘How to Bee’ by Bren MacDibble. The students have developed background knowledge about the author and the text while building an understanding of the important role bees play within the ecosystem. They explored narrative structure by examining how complications and turning points influence the development of the plot and affect characters and events. Students strengthened their comprehension skills by recognising and comparing character perspectives, settings and viewpoints to deepen their understanding of the text. They also learnt to express and justify opinions about key characters and analysed how the author presents the theme of family throughout the story. In addition, students developed their ability to write in a concise and factual journalistic style.
In Maths, students have developed their understanding of number concepts by identifying and classifying numbers to 100 as prime or composite and expressing composite numbers using factor trees. They explored square and triangular numbers through the use of arrays, counters, exponents and addition patterns, and applied this knowledge to solve worded mathematical problems. Students also strengthened their understanding of place value by multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals by powers of 10. So far in our unit on chance, students have investigated possible outcomes of experiments and observed how outcomes change as sample sizes increase. They represented probabilities using fractions, decimals and percentages, verified that the total probability of all outcomes equals 1, and calculated probabilities using two-way tables and the probability continuum.
Our Inquiry unit this term has a focus on ‘Australian History.’ Students have been given the opportunity to look at some of the events that have transpired since the early 1900s. These include but are not limited to; Federation, White Australia Policy, Women's right to vote, the Indigenous rights to vote, the impact war has had on our country and others. Students are developing their knowledge and understanding of some of the historical events that have shaped Australia in the 1900s and the impacts they have had on our country.
Overall, it has been a positive start to the second term of 2026, with many students’ displaying curiosity and developing commitment to their learning and leadership skills. We are looking forward to seeing their continued growth and development in the months ahead, as well as our upcoming Urban Camp to Melbourne
