Grade 6 students have continued from their start to Term Two, building on with their strong connections and leadership skills with their peers and teachers. The second half of Term Two has seen a number of opportunities for the students to show their leadership skills and display the values of Birregurra Primary School, both at school and outside in the wider community.
In Week 5 of this term, students attended Urban Camp in Melbourne alongside staff from Birregurra Primary School. Throughout the camp, students participated in a wide range of activities and visited several iconic Melbourne locations, many of which some students had never experienced before. The camp provided opportunities for students to build independence, develop confidence, and create lasting memories. Highlights included travelling on public transport, ice skating, navigating Melbourne's city streets, touring the MCG, and taking in the spectacular views from the Eureka Skydeck. What an amazing experience for everyone!
In English, students have continued their novel study of How to Bee by Bren MacDibble. This term, they have been developing their writing skills across both narrative and journalistic genres. Students have learnt how to accurately quote and report speech, express and justify opinions about characters and events, and analyse texts to support their thinking. Students have also explored the key features of news writing, including the structure and purpose of news articles. They have practised creating engaging headlines and effective lead sentences that capture the reader’s attention while clearly communicating key information. Through these learning experiences, students have strengthened their ability to write for different purposes and audiences, applying a range of language features and text structures effectively.
In Mathematics, students have continued their learning in the Chance and Probability unit. This term, they have developed their understanding of probability by conducting and analysing a range of chance experiments. Students collected and interpreted data from repeated trials, explored how probabilities can be represented on a probability continuum, and investigated the relationship between experimental results and theoretical probability. Students learnt to calculate probabilities using two-way tables and tree diagrams, represent probabilities as fractions, and identify all possible outcomes within an experiment. They also designed and explained their own probability investigations, strengthening their mathematical reasoning skills and their ability to communicate their understanding of chance, likelihood, and uncertainty.
Our Inquiry unit this term has continued to focus on Australian History. Students have explored how women's rights have changed since the early 1900s, comparing and contrasting life then with life today. They have also investigated the contributions of influential individuals who advocated for change and challenged existing laws and social expectations. In addition, students have examined the experiences of people who migrated to Australia, comparing and contrasting their stories with their own lives and experiences to develop a deeper understanding of migration and identity.
In Respectful Relationships, students have continued participating in the Love Bites program, facilitated by a member of Victoria Police alongside teaching staff. Through a combination of small-group and whole-class activities, students have had opportunities to share their thoughts, engage in meaningful discussions, and participate in a range of learning experiences. Topics explored have included consent, healthy and unhealthy relationships, conflict resolution, and relationships and social media. Students have engaged positively throughout the program, actively participating in discussions and activities. These sessions have fostered thoughtful conversations and provided valuable opportunities for students to develop their understanding of respectful relationships and personal wellbeing.
Overall, it has been a great end to the first semester. Students have been displaying enthusiasm, curiosity, and a strong commitment to their learning and leadership skills, as well as getting to experience many different and exciting opportunities along the way. We are excited to continue to see their continued growth and development in the months ahead!
