Grade 6 students have continued their strong start to the school year, building on the positive connections they have with their peers and teachers. Throughout the term, students have consistently demonstrated the classroom expectations and school values, serving as role models and leaders at Birregurra Primary School. This has been reflected in their adherence to established routines and their consistent, positive behaviours, particularly in being organised to begin the school day and when transitioning between subjects.
A key highlight for some students was attending Somer’s Camp, which provided a fantastic opportunity to try new experiences and strengthen friendships in a different environment. Meanwhile, other students have been developing their leadership skills by conducting House Sport training sessions during lunchtimes. These sessions showcased effective communication and teamwork, with students responding positively and demonstrating enthusiasm, passion, and leadership throughout.
In English, students have been developing their comprehension and analytical skills through close reading of texts, focusing on how characters respond to challenging situations. They have been learning to make inferences about events, as well as main and supporting characters, using evidence from the text to support their ideas. Students have been analysing how characters change over time and how their traits influence their reactions, while also exploring symbols and imagery to deepen their understanding of meaning. They have been examining how authors use language to shape scenes and develop characters and applying this knowledge by summarising character traits and writing from a character’s perspective.
In Maths, students have been developing their understanding of measurement and space by working with metric units to calculate distance, area, and capacity. They have been learning to apply this knowledge in real-world contexts, such as interpreting schedules, calculating elapsed time, and determining travel durations using consistent speeds and metric conversions. Students have also been building their spatial awareness by reading, plotting, and describing points on the Cartesian plane, including navigating all four quadrants and understanding movement using coordinates. Additionally, they have been using their laptops during the fluency component at the beginning of each lesson to access the interactive digital learning tool Times Tables Rock Stars, further developing their mathematical skills and building automaticity and recall of multiplication facts.
Over the past few weeks, our Inquiry unit has focused on what it means to use and develop time management skills. Students have been learning about why time management is an important skill for everyday life. They have been developing strategies to manage their time effectively by planning tasks, setting priorities, and staying organised. Students have also been exploring the skills needed for good time management, such as focus, responsibility, and goal setting. Through this, they have been building an understanding of what effective time management looks like and how it can help them complete tasks successfully while reducing stress.
In Respectful Relationships, we have placed a strong emphasis on how we interact with those around us and the different emotions we may experience throughout the day. We have been focusing on how emotions can not only impact ourselves but also influence those around us. Students have engaged in activities that help them become more aware of emotions and how these can be expressed through both verbal and non-verbal cues, supporting the development of positive and respectful interactions within the school community.
Overall, it has been a fantastic first term, with students demonstrating enthusiasm, curiosity, and a strong commitment to their learning. We look forward to seeing their continued growth and development in the months ahead!
