It has been a busy and exciting Term Two in the Grade 4/5 classroom with plenty of growth and learning across all areas of the curriculum. A group of Grade 5 students represented Birregurra Primary School in the netball and football Lightning Premierships. Congratulations to our footballers who played with great teamwork and effort, and to our netballers who showed incredible determination and grit throughout the day.
This term, students also had the opportunity to attend an excursion to COPACC to see the live performance Imagine. The show was engaging, thought-provoking and creatively staged, encouraging students to reflect on the power of imagination, storytelling and visual performance. It was a wonderful cultural experience that sparked meaningful discussion back in the classroom.
In the final weeks of term, we look forward to connecting with families through Parent/Teacher Conversations in Week 10. These meetings are a great opportunity to celebrate your child’s progress, discuss learning goals, and strengthen the home-school partnership. To wrap up the term, we will also be holding a Learning Showcase in the 4/5 classroom during Week 11. Families will be invited to visit and see a range of student work on display across literacy, numeracy, and inquiry. We’re excited for students to share and reflect on their achievements from Semester One.
Looking ahead to next term, both Grade 4 and Grade 5 students will be involved in Life Education sessions as part of the Health curriculum. Grade 5s will participate in a puberty education module, while Grade 4s will undertake a different age-appropriate program focused on health and wellbeing.
Families have also received an expression of interest regarding the Grade 3–6 Camp to YMCA Anglesea, which will take place from Wednesday 13th to Friday 15th August. This promises to be an exciting experience focused on team building, resilience and outdoor adventure.
Throughout the term, students have undertaken various assessments and shown fantastic effort, resilience, and a willingness to challenge themselves in their learning.
In Reading, students have been exploring the richly illustrated graphic novel The Arrival by Shaun Tan. They have been developing their skills in interpreting visual texts and understanding narrative without words, as well as discussing themes such as migration and belonging. In the last couple of weeks of term, students have begun transitioning into poetry, experimenting with different poetic forms and techniques to express ideas and emotions creatively.
In Writing, students focused on famous Australian immigrants, researching and writing informative pieces about their lives, contributions, and impact on Australian society. This allowed students to develop their skills in biography writing while learning about diversity and cultural heritage.
In Mathematics, we built upon and extended key number skills. Topics covered included:
During our Respectful Relationships sessions, we identified and celebrated personal and peer strengths, focusing on what makes us unique. We also began developing positive coping strategies to help manage strong emotions in ourselves and others.
It’s been a busy and rewarding term in the 4/5 classroom. Students should be very proud of their learning and how they’ve matured in both their confidence and responsibility. I’m looking forward to all that Term 3 will bring!
