The past few weeks in Prep/One have been very busy with lots of learning and adventures. Our students did an amazing job at Polwarth Sports, giving all the activities a red-hot go. A big thank you to our wonderful parents who ensured the students made it safely to all their events. Our House Sports training is well under way and the students are loving sharing about their PE lessons. The students have also begun their lunchtime house training sessions, run by our senior students, as they prepare for our fun team events!
During our literacy sessions, we have continued building our understanding of letter/sound relationships, becoming blending and segmenting experts. Our Dandelion Readers have been well received at home as our students showcase their ability to ‘say the sounds and read the words’ to their loved ones. We completed our first text-based unit on ‘Come Over to my House’ and have just begun our next unit on ‘Stay for Dinner’. It has been lovely learning about similarities and differences in our families and homes. Throughout our literacy block we have also been working hard to develop our handwriting skills, taking our time to correctly form a variety of capital and lowercase letters. It has been great to see the students seeking feedback and refining their writing skills.
In our numeracy sessions, we have become subitising experts, using our ‘subitising eyes’ to quickly see collections. We have had lots of good number talks with students explaining the different ways they are able to see the number. Across the last two weeks, we have delved into data and graphing as well as measuring and comparing length of objects. The students loved using a range of manipulatives to create their own graphs, identifying the most and least popular options.
Throughout our ‘Respectful Relationships’ program, we have explored emotional literacy and personal strengths. We have been practising identifying different emotions, looking at what they look like, sound like and feel like. We are learning about our different personal strengths and how we can use these strengths to work collaboratively in a group. Our hands on activities and games have been a huge hit!
The students have begun their first round of Clubs for 2026 and have returned to the classroom each week with excitement as they share about their adventures. From ‘Baking Bosses’ to ‘Minecraft Mania’ the clubs sure are a highlight of a Thursday for the Prep/Ones. I can’t wait to hear about what else they get up to!
It has been a busy start to the year in the Prep/One classroom and all students have transitioned extremely well. It is lovely to see the friendships forming and the learning happening. We are looking forward to continuing all our learning successes as the year progresses. A huge thank you to the parents who continue to support our learning at home.
