We’ve had a busy and exciting Term 1 in our Grade 2/3 classroom! The students have settled in beautifully, establishing positive classroom routines and behaviours. It has been wonderful to see their confidence and independence grow as the term has progressed, and they have done a fantastic job working collaboratively and supporting one another.
In literacy, our text-based unit has centred around The Shop Train by Josie Wowolla Boyle. Through this text, students focused on extending simple sentences and expanding their vocabulary to make their writing more detailed and engaging. In preparation for NAPLAN, we also developed our skills in writing both narrative and persuasive texts, with students practising organising their ideas clearly and using more descriptive language. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident writers and experimenting with new vocabulary in their writing.
In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of addition and subtraction within 100. They have used base 10 blocks to add numbers and to support regrouping when adding two 2-digit numbers. Students have also been learning to use the vertical algorithm for addition and are beginning to understand how to carry over when the ones add to more than 10. In subtraction, students have been practising solving problems using the vertical algorithm and learning how to regroup tens and ones using base 10 blocks before moving on to renaming when subtracting. We have also explored measurement, using rulers to measure everyday objects and reading and recording measurements in millimetres and centimetres. Students have begun reading measurement scales for metres and kilometres and are learning to clearly show their thinking when solving addition and subtraction problems.
In Inquiry, through our Launching Learners program, students have been exploring our school values and discussing strategies to help us understand and manage our emotions. We have also learnt about important events such as Clean Up Australia Day and St Patrick’s Day, helping students make connections between their learning and the world around them.
A big congratulations to our Grade 3 students who have just completed NAPLAN. They approached the assessments with a positive attitude and showed great perseverance. We are incredibly proud of the effort they put into preparing for and completing their tests.
Thank you to all the parents who participated in Parent–Teacher Conversations. Your support in setting goals and working together to support student learning is greatly appreciated. Your involvement plays an important role in your child’s educational journey, and I thank you for your continued support throughout the term.
