Family Science Week Nature Photo Challenge

To celebrate National Science Week 2026 and this year's theme, Seeds of Science: Nurturing Science for All, we are inviting all families to take part in our Family Nature Photo Challenge!

Science begins with curiosity and careful observation. We encourage families to spend some time together exploring your backyard, local park, farm or neighbourhood and capture the amazing science that surrounds us every day.

Photograph one or more of the following:

  • ? A seed or seed pod
  • ? A flower or plant growing
  • ? An insect or pollinator
  • ? A bird or other native animal
  • ? A fungus or mushroom
  • ? An interesting leaf or plant
  • ?️ A spider web or another pattern found in nature
  • ☁️ Something that shows the weather or seasons at work

Along with your photo, include a short caption (one or two sentences) answering the question:

What makes this interesting from a science perspective?

Email your favourite photo(s) and caption to the school at birregurra.ps@education.vic.gov.au by Friday 14th August.

We will use these photos to create a whole-school Nature Photo Display ready for National Science Week. Classes will have the opportunity to explore the display; discuss the science they notice and use the photos to inspire new questions and wonderings.

This activity encourages students and families to slow down, observe the world around them and discover that science is all around us. By sharing our observations, we can celebrate the curiosity and scientific thinking of our whole school community. We can't wait to see what you discover!
