Grade 3/4A

It’s been an exciting few weeks in 3/4A, including students participating in a range of engaging learning experiences across all areas. We have continued to build our classroom culture, ensuring our learning environment is a place where everyone feels safe, respected, and encouraged to do their best. It was wonderful to see all students enthusiastically participating in Polwarth Sports. A huge congratulations to Kate, Stella and Mahalia who went on to compete at the Colac Division Athletics.

In Reading, the students have been focusing on building their reading comprehension strategies, including predicting, clarifying, questioning, and summarising. The students are participating in daily independent reading and it’s wonderful to see them accessing our extensive classroom library to find ‘Just Right’ books. We are currently reading our class novel ‘Runt’ by Craig Silvey. The underlying message in this novel has sparked group discussions about finding students passions and supporting peers to do the same.

In Writing, we completed 'persuasive' and 'narrative' timed writing pieces in preparation for NAPLAN. Students thoroughly enjoyed using their knowledge and imaginations to write a narrative piece based on the title 'What an Amazing Machine.' We have continued to build our ability to read and write polysyllabic words as part of our Sounds Write sessions, focusing on developing our understanding of new and interesting vocabulary.

In Maths, our focus for Statistics and Probability has been on constructing and interpreting a range of graphs including, line, column, and pictographs. For Number and Algebra, we completed our unit on place value. Students explored how we can partition numbers into smaller parts and use these to help solve addition and subtraction equations. For Measurement and Geometry, we have measured the length of objects in our classroom and calculated the area and perimeter of various 2D shapes.

For Inquiry, we are continuing to focus on ‘Launching Learners’, exploring attitudes, character strengths and the social and emotional skills for success. Throughout our ‘Respectful Relationships’ program, we have looked at emotional literacy and personal strengths. We have been practising reading and interpreting different emotions and putting a name to these.

We have had a wonderful Term One and look forward to many more learning milestones and new adventures next term!
